Steve Irwin was a larrikin - not that there's anything wrong with that.
As an American I was not aware of larrikinism before Steve's tragic death. Larrikins seem to be a uniquely Australian phenomenon. Other larrikins that Americans may be familiar with are Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) and the late Bon Scott (AC/DC).
So what is this larrikinism? And more importantly is it communicable?
Wikipedia defines Larrikinism as: Larrikinism is the name given to the Australian folk tradition of irreverence, mockery of authority and disregard for rigid norms of propriety. Larrikinism can also be associated with self-deprecating humour.
Now I should note that not all Australians are proud of their national larrikins (yes, that includes Steve). I mean would Americans be happy if the rest of the world thought that all Americans were like Larry the Cable Guy?
For discussion:
Do red necks in the US mock authority enough to be considered American larrikins?

Television over Broadband.
Today I ordered Setanta Sports and the Interactive TV Networks (ITVN).
Setanta Sports carries a lot of soccer matches, including the English Premier League. It also has some rugby union (I think I've seen rugby league too), gaelic sports, Australian rules football and more. I'm most interested in soccer (go Arsenal!) but the other sports should be interesting as well - more rugby league please.
ITVN delivers TV content over a broadband internet connection. Some programming is by subscription like Setanta and other programing is pay-per-view, such as movies. ITVN uses a black box that plugs into a broadband modem (or router) and the television.
My ITVN box should arrive early next week, I'll let you know how things go.

Food Network, Saturdays 9:00 pm ET
Fans of Alton Brown (pictured with the Colonel) and his Good Eats show on the Food Network have probably already discovered this four part series. However this is not a cooking show, it is a travel show that features roadside food with a bit of history thrown in too. So tag along with Alton as he and his chow hounds ride motorcycles across the United States and sample the best curbside cuisine that the country back-roads have to offer.
